Our members asked for more opportunities to engage with knowledgeable colleagues in the profession, in creative and convenient ways – and we heard you!
As a part of our 2018 Continuing Education Program, we are pleased to be launching a new initiative – Learning Wednesday Series with Dr. Joseph ‘Joe’ Hunter, LCSW, PhD. This online, bi-monthly series offers live Continuing Education in a broad array of topic areas on a consistent schedule. Dr. Hunter is a foremost expert in his field, and we are excited to have been able to partner with him to share his expertise with our membership.
Each workshop will take place on a Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST and is available for 1.5 continuing education contact hours. This series is available to NASW-NYS members for $10/workshop.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to lasting “implicit memories” that belie vulnerabilities to later life stress and trauma. Many of the adult diagnoses, such as depression, borderline personality, anxiety and substance use disorders, have their roots in ACEs. This webinar will discuss the relationship between the Big T and Little T trauma and the implications for later life mental illness, including diagnosis and treatment. |

Then, a brief PowerPoint presentation will review relevant theories about anxiety disorder, provide a review the DSM V diagnostic criteria and highlight the prominent symptoms of the GAD. Then, a full case description will be provided, and the learners will be challenged to apply the diagnostic criteria and identify the prominent symptoms for the case using a worksheet. Clinical tools and techniques that serve to help facilitate accurate assessment and diagnosis of anxiety disorders will be discussed. |

Next, the case will be more fully described and the diagnostic criteria will be identified by the learners using a poll. Learners will be challenged to describe what practice techniques would be used to address the specific needs and concerns of the case presented, pertaining to GAD, noting these on their worksheets. Then, additional discussion utilizing the chat function will be facilitated. Next, a brief dialogue is presented regarding the application of an intervention to the case on GAD, and the learners will be asked to offer suggested questions and statements that show their understanding of how to apply the techniques learned. |
