Program Description:
Trauma Informed Care is an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. Trauma Informed Care also emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety for both consumers and providers. Becoming “trauma-informed” means recognizing that people often have many different types of trauma in their lives. People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender nonconforming and/or queer are at higher risk of trauma due to homophobia, transphobia, heteronormativity and cisgender-normativity. As with all trauma survivors, LGBTQ and gender nonconforming people who have been traumatized need support and understanding that takes their specific experiences into account. Often, LGBTQ trauma survivors can be re-traumatized by well-meaning caregivers and community service providers who are not trauma-informed in this particular context.

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Have he necessary skills to work with LGBTQ trauma survivors in a trauma-informed, culturally inclusive approach
  • Have foundational knowledge about trauma, the specific needs of LGBTQ trauma survivors with a specific focus on stabilization and resilience
  • Be able to view agency systems and clients through a new LGBTQ trauma-informed perspective and implement evidence-based strategies, policies and protocols to create and maintain a trauma-informed organization that is inclusive of the needs of LGBTQ clients

This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.
