VMHTI - Techniques for Working with Trauma, Addiction, Mental Health and Stress in Veteran Populations: An Experiential Learning Workshop
One full-day training that will focus on effective treatment methods used in treating veteran populations. Workshops will be presented via educational as well as experiential learning techniques. Presenters will provide an overview of each respective technique, how it applies to trauma, addiction, and mental health, and stress management/prevention, as well as firsthand training and illustration.
All attendees will be required to bring their own yoga mat in order to participate. CEUs will be offered.

An Introduction to Breath Work- Angela Byrns, LCSW
In this workshop, participants will learn about the history and therapeutic dimensions of breathwork as well as the benefits of incorporating aromatherapy into mind-body treatment. Participants will learn about the objectives behind using this type of method with veterans and trauma survivors. This will be an interactive workshop where you will learn about and participate in Kundalini and breathing exercises. A breath analyses will be demonstrated to show distinct breathing patterns, origins of constricted breath, and how these are linked to symptoms and behaviors.
Meditation and Yoga Workshop- Joe Johnson, Air Force Veteran and LCSW
This workshop will be an interactive Mindfulness & Yoga experience. Presenter will start with a brief overview of the benefits of Meditation and Yoga, specifically with veterans and trauma survivors; then dive right in to a series of 4-5 guided meditation experiences, along with some moving and stretching in Yoga postures. This is gentle movement suitable for beginner and experienced yoga practitioners alike. Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for stretching and mild exercise.
Prolonged Exposure Presentation - Dr. Shari Allen, Air Force Veteran
This workshop will provide a general idea of the use of Prolonged Exposure Treatment utilized with combat veterans to process through traumatic events and work toward re-engaging them with in real life situations. Speaker will provide general education on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the “Recovery Process”.
Participants will engage in an experiential exercise on the effects of intrusive thoughts. Workshop will incorporate a demonstration, modeling a combat veteran recounting a traumatic incident as part of the imaginal process utilized in the Prolonged Exposure protocol.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Joe Johnson, LCSW and Air Force Veteran - Yoga and Meditation is a Social Worker, Yoga Instructor, and recently retired from the Office of Mental Health after a 17-year career as a social worker. He is also a 26-year retired veteran of the Air Force. His background prior to yoga was primarily in mental health, working with a variety of clients, to include: the U.S. military, United Cerebral Palsy, St. Luke's Hospital (Utica); and counseling inmates in the New York State Correctional System.
He has been practicing Yoga and Meditation for 10 years. Joe currently teaches Yoga at: Universal Yoga Center in Washington Mills, N.Y. He also volunteers to teach veterans with PTS symptoms at Sitrin Rehabilitation Center in New Hartford, N.Y.
Joe resides in Utica with his wife and enjoys exercising, traveling, hiking, kayaking, biking, and attending cultural events in Central N.Y.
Angela Byrns, LCSW - Breathwork is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a post-master's certificate in hospice and palliative care. She has been in the social work field for over 20 years, mainly working with children and families providing individual, group, and family therapy. She currently works at East End Hospice as the Children's Bereavement Coordinator and Camp Good Grief Director. Angela developed the children's bereavement program at East End Hospice which includes grief, bereavement and trauma counseling, and community outreach and education. She has lectured at conferences on these topics and has also been a part of equine therapy programs, as well as retreats for veterans through the Military Resilience Project. In doing trauma work, Angela recognizes the importance and benefit of including experiential techniques in therapeutic settings for both the client and the practitioner.
Dr. Shari Allen, Air Force Veteran - Prolonged Exposure Presentation a Clinical Psychologist employed by the Stratton-Albany VA Medical Center. She received her Doctorate’s Degree in Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. Dr. Allen has worked in the VA system for over 14 years, working with veterans who have served in combat arenas to address both combat and Military Sexual trauma. Dr. Allen is currently assigned to the PTSD clinic in Albany, offering treatment to veterans to address their military traumas and effects on their current life. She provides counseling through the use of video conferencing technology to the distant VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics, as well as Video Conferencing into the veteran’s homes. Dr. Allen is trained in Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy, which are Evidenced Based Trauma treatments provided through the VA system. She is also a Prolonged Exposure Consultant, providing consultation to VA clinicians as part of the Prolonged Exposure training through the VA Initiative program out of Palo Alto, California. Dr. Allen served in the United States Air Force and grew up in New York State.
