Social Workers are at a high risk for burnout, secondary traumatic stress and compassion fatigue due to the daily professional pressures that can include: oppressed and/or traumatized client populations, robust caseloads, administrative responsibilities, program management and staff turnover.
Self-care is an essential social work survival skill and professional development priority. Self-care refers to activities and practices that we can engage in on a regular basis to reduce stress and maintain and enhance our short and long term health and well-being, both personally and professionally.
In the workshop we will review contemporary research and discuss the dynamics of burnout, secondary stress and compassion fatigue as occupational hazards. We will complete the workshop with an examination of evidence based self-care strategies that enhance well-being, reduce the likelihood of burnout and improve performance in all social work practice settings.
