Workshop Description
More than ever before, it is vital as social workers that we increase our knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice (EBP) in helping clients understand and manage their feelings and behaviors surrounding racism and discrimination. In this continuing series on microaggressions, social workers will gain intervention skills in their work with clients, within clinical micro-practice. This training will help social workers provide an earlier diagnosis and implement culturally tailored treatments or interventions. Social workers will gain intervention skills in their work with clients. Resources will also be provided that social workers can apply to their practice and share with clients. Increasing social worker’s knowledge of microaggressions will inform the development and application of strategies in advocacy for policy development in promoting social justice for marginalized populations.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Display knowledge of microaggressions in human societies as a values-base for social work practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of the NASW Code of Ethics that mandates social workers’ responsibilities to oppressed groups
- Demonstrate understanding and awareness surrounding the common occurrence of microaggressions, using a critical lens
- Explore potential consequences and outcomes associated with experiences of microaggressions, and the impact on social work practice
- Begin to identify and implement techniques and interventions in response to microaggressions

Kari Tabag, Phd (abd), LCSW-R, received her MSW from Adelphi University where she is also a social work doctoral candidate. Kari is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R) with the State of New York for the past 23 years. Kari’s research focuses on the psychological impact of gendered racial microaggressions among women of diversity. Kari is a school social worker the New York City Department of Education for the Committee on Special Education, and an adjunct professor in the Master of Social Work program at Adelphi University. She also maintains a private practice working with adolescents and emerging adults. Kari is a committee member of the National Association of Social Work’s (NASW) New York State Diversity Committee. Kari published the chapter, The DSM-5 and the Omission of Asperger’s Disorder, in The Cause of Autism: Concepts and Misconceptions (Tabag, 2014), and presents at conferences with the mission of promoting social justice, advocacy for those experiencing oppression, and embracing cultural diversity.
