Workshop Description

Field supervisors require support, education, and training but need access to such materials in ‘bite size’ segments. Marist College Social Work Field Education Program has developed a ‘Virtual Lunch and Learn’ Series where you can join in and learn about the various fundamental aspects of field education and supervision. These 60-minute sessions are engaging, informative, and seek to transform your thinking about the various aspects of field supervision. This is the second session in a six-part series. The title of this session is: How to effectively evaluate your intern.

This session explores the strategies for using the evaluation of your intern as the catalyst for learning, growth and personal and professional reflection. The presenters showcase live examples of evaluating your intern ‘the wrong’ (not providing constructive or balanced feedback, or over-inflating scores and feedback) and the ‘right way’ (providing balanced feedback in a safe and supportive learning environment. We will conduct role plays to better articulate the subtle nuances of these concepts. The presenters share their own journey supporting field supervisors in their quest to provide students with informative evaluations that will support an intern’s growth and development into the future.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the necessity of giving feedback to students throughout the placement, not just during the end of semester evaluation;
  • Develop their own action plan for effectively evaluating your intern;
  • Transform the task of evaluating one’s intern into a beneficial learning opportunity for growth and development into the future.
