Empowering Practice with Youth: Effectively Supporting Young People

Workshop Description

This interactive presentation offers practitioners theory and best practices to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the young people we serve. We will cover topics including; building authentic relationships based in mutual trust and respect, seeing, reflecting and bolstering young peoples’ strengths, understanding the impact of systems of oppression on young peoples’ lives, supporting young people to engage in social change and self-awareness as a practitioner. Participants will gain valuable insights and practical strategies to effectively engage with young clients in a way that honors their unique experiences, strengths, and perspectives.


Learning Objectives

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and apply a strength-based approach to working with youth
  • Identify and practice strategies for building authentic relationship with youth
  • Explain and implement approaches to building empowering partnerships with youth
  • Analyze the challenges—including systemic oppression—that impact youth
  • Reflect on and utilize tools that promote self-awareness in your practice with youth

This workshop is approved for licensed social workers, licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed psychologists.


Presenter: Shira Sameroff, LCSW

Shira Sameroff, LCSW is a therapist, coach, teacher and group facilitator with over 30 years of practice with people of diverse identities, ages and life stories in a wide array of settings. Professional roles have included therapy, supervision, group design and facilitation, professional development training, teaching, community organizing, transformative decluttering and a decade and a half directing programs in a community-based social work agency. Other heart work has included board leadership, coordinating community events and projects large and small, canvassing and earth healing, sustainability projects.

Shira has presented with numerous companies and organizations on themes including ending oppression, shame, loneliness, group facilitation and empowering practice with youth. She weaves together healing modalities including IFS, Hakomi and other holistic, somatic, nature-based and anti-oppressive practices into her work with individuals, groups and organizations.

Shira’s approach is collaborative, intuitive, creative and full of heart and is rooted in my own lived experience of healing, learning and emerging.

Refund emails must include the subject line “Refund Request” and the attendee’s name, workshop date, and title in the body of the email.

  • All refunds are subject to a 20% administrative fee.
  • Refund requests typically take 5 business days to process.
  • No refunds for no-shows or partial participation.
  • We do not issue credits or apply refunds to future courses.
  • If NASW-NYS cancels the event, you will receive a full refund.
