The 2015 Council on Social Work Education “Educational Policy Accreditation Standards” require assessments of students’ competence to involve observations in real or simulated practice situations. This interactive workshop provides participants with real-world strategies for making observations of practice a reality. The training underscores how observation of practice is a unique and important tool for teaching and assessment. Deliberate practice is described as practice that is focused, intentional, and refined. This framework underpins our understanding of observation as a learning tool in social work field education. The workshop establishes how observations can provide transformational learning opportunities when located against the backdrop of deliberate practice—learning that shifts students from beginning practitioners to emerging competent and confident social work professionals.
Learning Objectives:
After the completion of this program, participants will:
- Understand strategies for making observations an everyday reality in social work field education.
- Recognize the benefit of deliberate practice as a framework for understanding observational learning opportunities.
- Develop future training strategies that will engage students and field supervisors in observational learning.Understanding how to build a culture of observation in field education
This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.
