Anti-Oppressive Framework: Reshaping Social Work Practice

Social Work Code of Ethics requires social workers to practice from a social justice focus. The anti-oppressive framework takes the concept of social justice further by challenging dominate ideology by seeking to empower those oppressed. An understanding of the anti-oppressive framework and how to incorporate it in practice can be an effective tool in reshaping client service delivery.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this training:
- Participants will understand the Anti-Oppressive framework and its importance
- Participants will learn how to utilize anti-oppressive practice with client systems and within the work setting
- Participants will learn how to adopt the Anti-Oppressive framework at the macro level
This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.

Shakira A. Kennedy, LMSW, PhD received her B.A. from Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus, her M.S.W. from Clark Atlanta University, and her Ph.D. from The University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Dr. Kennedy has over 13 years of practice experience working with children, families, and single adults diagnosed with mental illness and or HIV/AIDS along with extensive management experience. Her research focuses on addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and examining organizational culture and climate within various work settings. Dr. Kennedy joined the faculty at Touro College Graduate School of Social Work in 2016 after serving as an adjunct professor for the college for seven years. Dr. Kennedy continues her connection to the community by being an active member of Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus and an active journal reviewer for SAGE Open publications and a Consulting editor for the journal Children & Schools.
