WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Take an exciting journey down the halls of the state capitol. Learn about the inside machinations of how an idea becomes a bill, a bill becomes a movement, and ultimately, a law. And how the ever shifting legislative and electoral landscape impacts your practice, the profession and those whom we serve.

7:00PM - 8:00PM - State and Local Advocacy Open Dialogue* with Karin Carreau, MSW
Participants will have the opportunity to understand the intersection between policy and practice, how to use their inherent social work skill set to effectively engage their policy makers and drive sound social welfare policies. Additionally:
- Course will provide a tutorial of the legislative structure, legislative and budgetary processes and how they can influence both
- This course will teach social work participants how to employ their skill set (in assessment, evaluation, and development of a “treatment” advocacy plan/strategy
- This course will focus on employing their skills in effectively engaging their peers, building a movement, working in concert with coalitions, and press.
*The Western Division Steering Committee will be hosting an open dialogue with Karin Carreau, MSW at this workshop, to address how social workers can advocate for their profession, their clients, and local social justice issues in the current political atmosphere. This conversation will take place with no CE attached.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Karin Carreau, MSW, Founder and Principal of Carreau Consulting, has been on the scene at the capitol for nearly 15 years and as such, has built a strong track record of successes. Throughout her career, Carreau has provided representation on high profile issues in the arenas of juvenile justice, mental health parity, professional scope of practice licensing and continuing education issues, social services, and consumer protection.
Carreau created the states Veteran’s Mental Health Training Initiative and co-created the state’s Program on Problem Gambling. Carreau has worked extensively with statewide associations to develop strategic organizational policy priorities, craft and implement issue-specific campaigns, construct public relations messaging, cultivate stakeholder engagement and foster coalition building. Carreau previously served as NASW-NYS's Director of Policy.
