WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This program will take place from 9:30 AM – 4:15 PM.
Lunch will be from 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM and will not be provided. Please bring your own lunch.
Program Topic and Description:
• Description of Secondary Traumatic Stress
• Results of an agency study showing impact of STS on client care
• Options for self-care presentation and discussion
• Exercises on how agencies provide and do not provide opportunities for self-care to staff and clients
• Discussion of options for positive change
Learning Objectives:
- Be able to identify signs and symptoms of STS
- Be able to identify potential negative impacts of STS on clients when staff suffers from STS
- Be able to create a list of options for their own self-care
- Be able to identify how their agency does/does not provide options for self-care to staff and clients
- Be able to identify options for developing/maintaining self-care at their agencies for themselves and client
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Elaine Rinfrette received her BS in nursing from the University of Rhode Island, her MSW from Boston University, and her PhD from the University at Buffalo. She came to Edinboro University in 2011 and has been the director of the MSW Program since 2012. She worked for several years as an RN in pediatric intensive care before obtaining her MSW. Before obtaining her PHD, her MSW practice experience included 20 years in outpatient mental health treatment and outpatient substance abuse treatment. She is now involved in providing cancer survivors’ support. Dr. Rinfrette has published in several journals and is a peer reviewer as well. Her research interests include trauma, mental health, and addictions. Currently her work includes research on vicarious trauma, trauma, and establishing trauma informed systems of care in community agencies. Her research includes a multisite investigation of vicarious trauma and empathy in MSW students, the impact on trauma symptoms of the combined use of trauma sensitive yoga and the Seeking Safety intervention, and the impact of spirituality in the recovery process in addictions recovery.
