With the increased visibility and identification of sex offenders, social workers are increasingly seeing offenders in a variety of service setting. This presentation gives an overview of the range of characteristics and risks in the offender population, what to look for in appropriate evaluation and treatment services and how to collaborate effectively with specialized services. The emphasis is on community protection, risk reduction, and evidence based services.
Learning Objectives:
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Become familiar with Sex Offender dynamics
- Develop an awareness of assessment methods
- Have a basic knowledge of community-based management and treatment of offenders
- Learn what has been effective in offender rehabilitation

Carl W. Christensen, LCSW-R, LMFT is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in New York and owner of North Coast Counseling. He is a Clinical Member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers, a past Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy; and Fellow in the American Orthopsychiatric Association. Carl has worked with individuals and families for 30 years in public and private settings. He was previously on the faculty of the School of Social Work, Syracuse University, a Visiting Assistant Professor of Social Work at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and adjunct Human Services Instructor for Southwestern Oregon Community College.
