Workshop Description
Field supervisors require support, education, and training but need access to such materials in ‘bite size’ segments. Marist College Social Work Field Education Program has developed a ‘Virtual Lunch and Learn’ Series where you can join in and learn about the various fundamental aspects of field education and supervision. These 60-minute sessions are engaging, and informative, and seek to transform your thinking about the various aspects of field supervision. This is the third session in a six-part series. The title of this session is: How to effectively observe and offer balanced feedback to your intern.
This session explores the unique educational framework for observing students in real-time in their placement. The authors provide simple step by steps tools and resources for making observation a reality in your field supervisory relationship with your student. Underlying this approach is the development of the creation of a safe learning environment where students and field supervisors can speak openly about the student’s growth, development, and opportunities for further development. The presenters explore how the observation provides robust learning that is then utilized in end-of-semester field evaluations. We will also provide some emerging trends using the software Go React to provide annotated feedback to students via field supervisors.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the importance of observing students doing the work, and then offering constructive and balanced feedback post-observation.
- Identify the ways to provide balanced feedback through the creation of a safe supervisory relationship.
- Implement the use of observations in field supervision post-training.
This workshop is approved for 1.0 continuing education credit hours.
