Capitol Action Day is NASW-NYS’s annual advocacy event. It’s a day when we can come together, as social workers, to advocate for the policies that will help us provide better services to our communities and better serve the profession. At Capitol Action Day, we’ll have a chance to talk with legislators about the issues that matter to us—and most importantly, to you. This year we are advocating for the Social Work Workforce Act (A5291/S5975), restoring Medicaid Home Care access (A6346/S328), and increasing the school counselors, social workers and psychologists to student ratio in schools (A902/S1577)..
Capitol Action Day is open to both social work students and professionals. Attendees will visit their legislators throughout the day via legislative appointments or blanket canvassing to advocate for our issues.

Workshop Description
What is advocacy? Social workers advocate to give voice, and to speak out for the interests of others. As Mark S. Homan notes in Promoting Community Change, Making It Happen in the Real World: “Our professional identity, values, and ethics require us to advocate for the rights of members of the society.” This program will explore how social workers can undertake advocacy aligned with the NASW-NYS 2024 legislative priorities through meeting with NYS legislators. The program will focus on an overview of policy, advocacy and tips and tactics for a successful advocacy undertaking. Participants will understand the relevant rights, rules, and regulations related to the advocacy process. The theoretical framework of case to cause will be presented, in addition to discussing the tactics and strategies in moving a bill forward into law and the ethics of why we advocate as social workers.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Define policy advocacy.
2. Name three strategies in policy advocacy.
3. Explain ways to use economic analysis in advocacy
4. Describe the importance of data in advocacy.
5. Name three issues relevant to social workers and their clients.

NASW-NYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (Provider ID #0014), licensed mental health counselors (Provider ID #MHC-0053), licensed marriage and family therapists (Provider ID #MFT-0037) and licensed psychologists (Provider ID #PSY-0088).
Mark D. Goodwin, JD, MSW, LCSW, CCM Mark Goodwin is Project Director with SCTPN, Inc. based in Brooklyn and offering services throughout New York State. He oversees the case management program and Community Health Workers, connecting consumers to medical homes and addressing social determinants of health. SCTPN offers consulting and expertise in Transition services to health care providers, building bridges from pediatric to adult care.
He holds degrees from Brooklyn Law School and Boston University School of Social Work. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York State and a Certified Case Manager. Since 2006, he has been working in sickle cell advocacy. He has been a frequent presenter at national meetings on community organizing, sickle cell advocacy and transition planning. He is an adjunct faculty member at Adelphi University and the City University of New York, teaching social work research and policy.
