Workshop Description
This presentation offers emerging paradigms for the way that social workers address addiction. Typically, addiction is viewed and treated through a medical lens. While this method has been useful in advancing science and increasing compassion toward people living with an addiction, research has evolved to identify a vast array of other causes that are just as important as biology when considering the nature of addictive behavior. This presentation will highlight the crucial role that social determinants and stigma play in hindering the wellness of people living with an addiction and offer ways to envision a culture and a path to recovery that involves investments in environmental and social changes that lead to increased hope and healing.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1.    List at least three reasons why the disease model of addiction is outdated
2.    Identify at least three macro and/or holistic alternatives to the 12 step model that can be implemented in communities
3.    Describe how to identify attitudes and beliefs against people with an addiction that are stigmatizing
4.    Explain what Healing Centered Engagement is and how it is different than treatment.
5.    Identify the four levels of the Recovery Ready Ecosystems Model.

This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.

Ashley Owen, LMSW. Ashley Owen is a social worker based in New York City and has over a decade of post-masters’ experience in the field. Ashley began her career with aspirations to become a clinician, but she made a pivot to macro work several years after her graduation. While working with individuals and families, Ashley was struck by the degree to which oppressive and inefficient systems impacted the lives of the people she was trying to help. Since then, she has not regretted one moment of pivoting to macro work and has enjoyed contributing to the field by means of community organizing, policy and advocacy, administrative leadership, and education. She currently is a manager at Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness, a small public health non-profit that uses collective impact strategies to make systems level changes in mental health and addiction outcomes throughout the borough. Ashley is also an Adjunct Instructor at the College of Staten Island where she teaches Social Policy and Macro Practice in Communities & Organizations to MSW students.
