Workshop Description

This presentation will look at the relevance of continued service of Veterans through EMT, social work, police, fire, nursing, peer support, and other helping professions. We will discuss self disclosure among peers, benefits of peer connections especially in front line atmospheres, and best way to honor/foster continued service efforts. Panelists will highlight personal and professional experiences in an effort to demonstrate what continued service means. Military values such as mission and purpose will be outlined in relation to the importance of emotional development post service. Reintegration will be defined and explored through the lens of continued service. Lastly, presenter and panelists will outline recommendations for communication and language when working with veterans and peers in a clinical setting, as well as the importance of building peer services in as a discipline in treatment settings. 

 

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and define Continued Service, specifically for the veteran population.
  • Identify five specific values related to military culture.
  • Describe reintegration and best ways to foster it for veterans.
  • Identify layers and specific benefits of continued service.
  • Describe at least 3 communication practices that are effective in working with veterans

This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.

Aynisa Leonardo is a Licensed Clinical Art Therapist (LCAT, ATR-BC), who has been in the field of mental health services for 12 years. She is the Director of Military Services at Long Island Center for Recovery. Her prior experience includes working in inpatient, outpatient, and non-profit settings with clients experiencing posttraumatic stress, addiction, family conflict, and other mental health challenges. She has concentrated on advanced program development and clinical education, locally and nationally. She continues to provide evidence-based and interactive style presentations to hospitals, non-profits, and corporate agencies, in an effort to raise awareness of current trends and improve competency within the healthcare community.
