Workshop Description
This presentation will combine content on using the harm reduction approach for working with people who use drugs and how to appropriately respond to an opioid overdose. This program will also provide training for the administration of Naloxone as a step in the response of an opioid overdose.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the core principles and values of the harm reduction approach
- Describe local and national trends of substance use and overdoses
- Recognize signs and symptoms of a drug overdose
- Respond appropriately to a drug overdose
- Demonstrate how to administer Naloxone when an overdose occurs

NASW-NYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (Provider ID #0014), licensed mental health counselors (Provider ID #MHC-0053), licensed marriage and family therapists (Provider ID #MFT-0037) and licensed psychologists (Provider ID #PSY-0088).
Emma Fabian, MSW, holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University at Buffalo and Bachelor of Science degree from Canisius College. She is currently the Associate Vice President of Harm Reduction at Evergreen Health in Western New York. In her position at Evergreen Health, she oversees harm reduction and drug user health services at sites in Buffalo and Jamestown, New York. She participates in several local and statewide workgroups that are addressing issues that impact people who use drugs. Emma has conducted numerous trainings and presentations - both internally and in the community - on cultural competency, destigmatizing efforts, and harm reduction programming for area professionals. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member of the SUNY Buf falo School of Social Work.
