Workshop Description
Gun-related violence in the U.S. is at an all-time high. In fact, 43,000 Americans die from gun violence every year. In many cases, shooters send signals or show signs of moving toward violence long before they take action. Often, those in close contact will pick up on these signals but do not know what to do or whom to call for help. New York’s Red Flag Law (also known as the Extreme Risk Protection law) empowers medical and mental health professionals, as well as family and household members to intervene and prevent someone in crisis from harming themselves or others by temporarily preventing someone in crisis from accessing firearms. This presentation will provide an in-depth discussion of the Red Flag law as it pertains to those in clinical practice. The presenter will discuss how to utilize this law through step-by-step instructions on how to apply for an Extreme Risk Protection Order and when one might be necessary to prevent violence.

Learning Objectives
