Workshop Description
Virtual reality (VR) is a growing field, and its uses in educational and therapeutic purposes are being increasingly researched and proven to be effective. This workshop will describe the history of VR, devices used, how it is being used in social work education and therapy. In education, VR can facilitate experiences of cultural humility by allowing the user to experience a day in the life of someone in a different social location. In therapeutic settings, VR is proven to be effective as an intervention with individuals experiencing anxiety, PTSD, specific phobias, and schizophrenia. This workshop will also address ethical concerns around the use of VR, and ways to make this a safe and appropriate tool to use with clients in various settings. With social workers gaining knowledge and access to VR, the profession can advocate for equitable access and its use within our ethical guidelines.
