Workshop Description

Abusive Traumatic Bonding (ATB™) is a phenomenon present in many, if not all, cases of Intimate Partner Violence. It is closely related to the cycle of violence. ATB™ usually begins after the climax stage in the cycle of violence and is solidified during the second and second (and ongoing) honeymoon period(s). As the cycle of violence progresses, the bond becomes stronger and stronger, until it is almost impossible for the victim to leave. COVID-19 has impacted Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) to a great extent. More than ever, clinicians need to be aware of the increasing need for skilled interventions to address ATB™.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Increase their general knowledge of intimate partner violence, the cycle of violence and its relationship to ATB™
  • Identify and apply treatment modalities to be effective in clinical settings with clients experiencing ATB
  • Understand how the implications of race, gender, culture/ethnicity, sexual orientation, level of ability, and socio-economic status play in ATB™
  • Increase awareness of how their counter-transferential responses impact the therapeutic relationship and treatment outcomes and have a “toolbox” at hand to cope with these feelings

This workshop is approved for 4.0 continuing education credit hours.
