Workshop Description
Workshop will focus on the diverse and complex needs experienced by veterans who are addiction survivors. Workshop will provide an overview of reasons that lead veterans to use and misuse substances and alcohol, including self medication, pain management, and symptom management. Presenter will discuss the overlap between mental health trends and addiction. Different categories of substances will be discussed, in relation to how they affect the mind and body. Presenter will cover a range of traditional and progressive treatment options that are geared towards healing and recovery for these specialized needs. Presentation will discuss stigma, diagnosis, self-medicating, addiction statistics, resource availability, system barriers, and proactive loopholes to implementing best care practices.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 clinical trends related to addiction
- Identify 3 cutting treatment options that are effective in treating addiction, specifically with the veteran population.
- Demonstrate relevant statistics related to mental health and addiction, as well as a detailed list of screening questions to aid in prevention.
- Identify signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol use, as well as distinctions between categories of drugs and their effects.
- Define what it means to self medicate, and at least 3 clinical reasons why individuals do.

Aynisa Leonardo is a Licensed Clinical Art Therapist (LCAT, ATR-BC), who has been in the field of mental health services for 12 years. She is the Director of Military Services at Long Island Center for Recovery. Her prior experience includes working in inpatient, outpatient, and non-profit settings with clients experiencing posttraumatic stress, addiction, family conflict, and other mental health challenges. She has concentrated on advanced program development and clinical education, locally and nationally. She continues to provide evidence-based and interactive style presentations to hospitals, non-profits, and corporate agencies, in an effort to raise awareness of current trends and improve competency within the healthcare community..
