Workshop Description

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and over 47,000 Americans die by suicide on an annual basis. The field of suicide prevention is relatively young, and theory describing the reasons why individuals engage in suicide is incomplete, until now. The presentation will describe a new robust theory, The Self Preservation Theory of Human Behavior (SPT). Attendees will be introduced to SPT, as applied to suicide prevention. This presentation will include a comprehensive description of the dynamics of suicide using SPT, as well as specific screening, assessment and intervention approaches to successfully treat suicide adolescents and adults. The workshop will present research that supports key propositions of SPT, and describe a qualitative review of suicide letters that highlight the key vulnerabilities described by SPT. Attendees will have the opportunity to apply learned material to real cases. 

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

• Describe the incidence and prevalence of suicide across the world and in the United States
• Describe the suicide vulnerabilities informed by the Self Preservation Theory of Human Behavior (SPT) and how the theory augments and advances current theory and research.
• Understand how SPT informs advanced suicide screening and assessment strategies enabling accurate risk level determinations.
• Engage in the formulation of specific suicide prevention and treatment strategies to successfully treat individuals with elevated suicide risk

Presenter:

Dr. Joseph Hunter's education includes a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, a Masters Degree in Social Work, and a Ph.D. in Social Work. Dr. Hunter was awarded the SAMHSA Dissertation Grant to complete his study on adolescent substance use disorder treatment. Dr. Hunter currently serves as the VA Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY, where he completed post-doctoral training as a VA/Hartford Geriatric Social Work Scholar, and he was awarded "Gold Status Fellow" in 2017 as a winner of VA's highly competitive "Shark Tank." Dr. Joseph Hunter is also a part-time Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Social Work, teaching online courses in their Masters of Social Work (MSW) program. He is also provides a variety of online and in-person continuing education courses for licensed social workers in New York State for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
