WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The complexity of adoption issues often makes it difficult for adoptive families to talk about adoption sensitive issues (birth families, reasons for relinquishment, core issues of adoption, and search & reunion). This workshop will review: adoption conversations over a lifespan, how clinicians can help adoptive parents identify fears that get in the way of them having conversations and provide sample conversations for difficult conversations with their child in an age appropriate manner. Workshop will also include information on helping adopted adults prepare for difficult conversations they would like to have with their adoptive parents.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how society’s history of avoiding adoption issues has set the stage for adoptive families to not know how to talk about adoption/relinquishment issues with one another.

  2. Learn the developmental stages of adoption for adoptive families through a life cycle.

  3. Learn a framework and techniques for suggested conversations for helping adoptive parents discuss difficult adoption topics with their child.

  4. Learn a framework and suggested conversations for adopted adults to talk about adoption issues with their parents.
