Workshop Description

Divorce, separation and family rearrangements affect all children because their lives are changing, and things become unpredictable. BIPOC children are also faced with historical and current family separations due to various institutional traumas and political gains. How can a play therapist consider the cultural stigmas and impacts on a changing family structure? How do we work with blended families, self-blame and shame around divorce?

Learning Objectives

Following this course, participants will be able to:

• Recognize the impact of divorce, separation, & breakups on children and recognize the impact of racism on BIPOC families.  

• Identify the psychological tasks of children or divorce (and separation) and how BIPOC families are resilient in their coping strategies.  

• Explain why play therapy is effective in treating children and families in separated situations and cultural considerations to incorporate into practice. 

Approved for 2.0 CE credit hours for licensed social workers, licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed psychologists.

About the Presenter

Lyrica Fils-Aime is a therapist, writer, and equity strategist who facilitates workshops about decolonizing leadership, anti-racist clinical work, healing justice, and play therapy. Lyrica has authored a childhood Racial Justice Curriculum for Sesame Street, Where We Go Wrong in Equity Work for NYU's VUE journal, Ancestral Trauma, Wisdom & Resilience for Psychotherapy.net and writes The Gift of [Anti-Racist] Therapy for Psychology Today. She has most recently written a chapter in Supervision Can Be Playful titled, Multicultural Supervision: Building Culturally Responsive Play Therapists. Lyrica has also published a Haitian children's book titled T se pou TapTap to help the Haitian children in her life access the Kreyòl language. Lyrica is the founder and CEO of Pilon Harlem, a facilitation hub sharing knowledge and strategies, helping organizations delve into difficult conversations in ways that feel manageable and enjoyable, while building stronger cultures of belonging.
