Workshop Description
This training offers an in-depth look at the criminal legal system, from arrest through reintegration, with a focus on the emotional, psychological, and social impacts at each stage. Tailored for social workers, therapists, and counselors, it equips participants with trauma-informed, evidence-based interventions. Attendees will explore mindfulness for emotional regulation, cognitive restructuring for trauma processing, and family systems techniques to improve communication. The session also emphasizes building trust, enhancing resilience, and supporting long-term healing and stability for individuals and families.

Elia M. Johnson, LCSW, is a clinical social worker licensed in NY and CT with over a decade of experience in forensic social work, trauma-informed care, and holistic defense. She is the Director of Social Work at Appellate Advocates and an experienced speaker and trainer, presenting nationally on justice-impacted populations, trauma-informed practice, and reentry support. Her work centers on client advocacy and interdisciplinary collaboration.
