Workshop Description

Relationship violence is still a common problem for young people today and while professionals may be familiar with common forms of power and control including verbal, emotional, and physical abuse, many adults are less familiar with the ways technology and social media can be used as tools of power and control in adolescent dating situations. This training will start by exploring the most common ways that technology and social media can be used in abusive situations and end with practical strategies that supportive adults can use to identify warning signs of digital dating abuse and have critical conversations with both survivors and perpetrators.

Learning Objectives

Following this course, participants will be able to:

• Define digital dating abuse and how it connects to larger systems of power and control. 
• Describe how digital dating abuse shows up on different social media platforms and how it may impact young people’s mental health 
• Use strategies to open up conversations about digital dating abuse
• Identify and support youth who are coping with or perpetrating digital dating abuse 
• Understand how digital dating abuse can look different for youth based on their identities.

Approved for 3.0 CE credit hours for licensed social workers, licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed psychologists.

About the Presenter

Kaleigh Cornelison, LMSW, LCSW is a trainer, facilitator, and social worker. She has nearly 15 years of experience as a social work and public health leader in community- and systems-based consulting and program management. Kaleigh supports nonprofits, health centers, universities, and schools through engaging professional development and consulting. She has also worked directly with adolescents and young adults in private practice and school-based settings. She has a Master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. Previously, she was the Assistant Director of the Adolescent Health Initiative and is currently the Youth Engagement Specialist for Yes and Know, a virtual sexual and reproductive health education curriculum for youth ages 14-19 at ETR, a health equity organization. She lives in beautiful Dexter, Michigan with her wife, daughter, and rescue pup, Calvin.
