Workshop Description
This training will provide an overview of the history of the LGBTQIA+ community, with a specific focus on transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. Drawing from personal experiences, previous research, and existing literature, the session will explore the common needs expressed by TGD individuals when seeking care. Participants will examine the barriers that often hinder access to treatment and services, and engage in a group discussion to identify strategies for creating safer, more affirming care environments. The training will also cover practical techniques for demonstrating allyship within the social work field and advocating for both TGD individuals and the broader LGBTQIA+ community. The program will conclude with an interactive activity and a Q&A session.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify disparities in mental health care among LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • Describe the micro and macro-level barriers to accessing gender affirming care among trans and gender diverse individuals.
  • Identify the specific mental health needs among trans and gender diverse individuals compared to the broader LGBTQIA+ population.
  • Develop strategies for professionals to implement safe and affirmative care to all LGBTQIA+ individuals.
