Workshop Description
This training will promote an increased understanding of the Deaf Community as a cultural and linguistic minority, focusing on clients within the Deaf community who use American Sign Language as their primary mode of communication. By understanding the historical and current values of these clients, including family dynamics, school dynamics, and language, you will be less likely to misunderstand and misdiagnose. Ethical considerations related to competence, multiple relationships, and confidentiality will also be explored, particularly as they relate to collaboration with certified interpreters.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify ethical considerations working with deaf clients
  • Discuss the perspective of identity versus disability
  • Describe audism and how it might present itself in work with a client
  • List communication options and preferences
  • Explain the roles and expectations of therapist and interpreter

This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.
