Workshop Description
Kink-affirming social work practice describes direct service provision that not only accepts but actively engages and welcomes kink-association as a part of a client’s life. This course is intended for clinicians who are new to or have basic experience in supporting kink-associated clients in the clinical setting. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the mental health and wellness experiences of kink-associated clients, including information about barriers to service and harm caused by underprepared providers. Participants will also have the opportunity work together to understand unique barriers in their individual clinical environments as well as address their personal biases, concerns, and growth edges. Additionally, the presenter will describe how to take a kink-affirming sexual history even for those clients whose primary presentation is not kink related.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Define foundational terms
2. Recognize and assess barriers to service for kink-associated clients
3. Identify at least two strategies to establish kink-affirming practice
4. Identify at least one unique intersection between kink and other marginalized identities
5. Take a kink-affirming sexual history

Cavanaugh Quick, LCSW, LICSW. Cavanaugh‘s work focuses on cultivating autonomy and accountability. Cavanaugh is a social worker by nature and by nurture, with clinical specialties in the areas of trauma, sexual assault and intimate partner violence, gender, sex, sexuality, and sex therapy. In community, Cavanaugh teaches comprehensive sexual health and relationship education. They offer consultation, technical assistance, and training for service providers focused on the needs of marginalized people across multiple areas. Cavanaugh is a New York State certified sexual assault crisis counselor and a member of the Sexual Liberation Collective — an intentional collaboration of people who are passionate about liberation and healing for all people. Their work is trauma-informed, kink-affirming, and poly-positive.
