Workshop Description
The workshop will delve into the historical context of voting rights, explorie its relevance to justice-impacted individuals and communities, and emphasize the significance of service providers being well-versed in voting rights when assisting individuals affected by the criminal legal system. It will underscore the importance of social workers being knowledgeable about voting rights, given the likelihood of serving clients impacted by mass incarceration. Furthermore, participants will gain insight into how disenfranchisement disproportionately affects individuals and communities of color.  The presenter will describe the strategies to advocate for voting rights and to support  impacted individuals effectively. Additionally, the presenter will offer guidance on ways service providers can educate their clients on voting rights and empower them to become advocates themselves.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1.    Describe the voting rights of justice impacted individuals in New York State
2.    Explain strategies to educate individuals on their voting rights.
3.    Identify ways to advocate for voting rights for people that are incarcerated.
4.    Explain ways that the mission of  social work is aligned with voting rights for those that are justice impacted.

Presenter:

Justyna Rzewinski, LCSW, is a PhD candidate at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University. Currently serving as a clinical supervisor for Correctional Health Services on Rikers Island. She specializes in sex offender treatment and shares her expertise through lectures on forensic social work and psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Justyna's research focuses on policies affecting justice-involved individuals, including sex offender laws and the voting rights of those with justice involvement. Committed to advocacy for all, she believes in providing opportunities for individuals to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, regardless of their past.
