Workshop Description

Social work is a profession that is defined by our ethical code, values, and principles. However, social ethics is often taught and explored from narrow perspective of professional ethics, a sub-field of ethics that focuses on specific questions and dilemmas that arise within a given context. The history of ethical thinking and provides a larger context and perspective on the work of ethics, which is to step outside of a given system and look at the assumptions and structures of that system through an ethical lens. Often, this lens is critical of existing systems, which creates an uncomfortable tension in a profession that exists within and is empowered within these systems. Utilizing this perspective, this program will discuss ethical approaches and dilemmas that arise in the context of contemporary social work practice and possibilities for resolving these dilemmas.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Place contemporary social work ethical thinking and practice into a larger historical and theoretical context.
• Identify at least one significant macro-level ethical dilemma that arises in the context of contemporary social work ethical thinking and practice.
• Verbalize different possibilities for resolving this dilemma and articulate reasons in favor or against those possibilities.

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.

Presenter:

​Steven Halady​, PhD, LCSW, completed his doctorate in Philosophy in 2010, and went back to complete his Masters of Social Work in 2015. Steven has worked in a variety of communities and capacities in social work, and now works in mental health private practice and teaches part time in the University at Buffalo, SUNY MSW program. Steven has been engaged in teaching and training in various forms and contexts since 2005. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2019, and has travelled internationally to provide professional trainings to diverse groups on topics including clinical practice, trauma and trauma-informed care, ethics, and diversity & inclusion. He is also an EMDRIA Certified EMDR practitioner and consultant-in-training. He lives in Buffalo, NY, USA with his husband and two cats.​
