Workshop Description
This course will focus on the special issues surrounding women and substance use disorders (SUD).  The training will include the scope of the problem, the unique characteristics, and circumstances that women face, as well as sex and gender differences. Substance use patterns will be reviewed and treatment considerations will be explored.  We will discuss the impact of stigma on this population as well as the issues related to pregnant and parenting women. A special focus on Harm Reduction strategies will be reviewed and discussed.

 

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1.    Identify unique characteristics of women as well as the circumstances and issues faced that may impact substance use/misuse.
2.    Differentiate between sex and gender differences in SUD treatment, including barriers to treatment. 
3.    Compare men and women regarding patterns and effects of specific substances.
4.    Discuss stigma and racial disparities in the treatment of women and pregnant women.
5.    Identify treatment issues, approaches, and best practices for women as well as pregnant and parenting women.

This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.

Debra Rhoades, LCSW, CASAC (M), CARC. Deb has dedicated over 35 years to the field of Addiction and Recovery. She earned her BSW and MSW from SUNY Albany and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Deb also holds a NYS certification as a Credentialed Addiction and Substance Abuse Counselor and in 2020, she earned her NYS Certified Recovery Coach (CARC) certification. Deb had a lengthy career in County government where she worked as a clinician, clinical supervisor, manager, and administrator.  She retired from Albany County Dept. of Mental Health in 2017 and transitioned to the public sector, where she took on the role of Assistant Executive Director at Hope House in Albany, NY. During her time there, she worked closely with the Women's and Women and Children's programs, gaining insight into the issues, challenges, and treatment needs of this group. In recent years, her work in recovery has deepened her understanding of the impact of stigma on this population and the value of implementing Harm Reduction strategies to support women with substance use. In 2019, Deb pursued self-employment to follow her passion for providing training, supervision, and consultation. Her main objective is to offer guidance, support, and training to professionals serving individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. She is the proud owner of Rhoades to Recovery.
