Workshop Description
Many clients seen by social workers and social work students are survivors of trauma, particularly interpersonal victimization. While some trauma survivors are seen in settings that focus on the trauma, many more seek help from settings in which current problems in living- rather than underlying trauma- are the focus of the work. Whether practice settings are trauma- or problem-focused, social workers and students must understand the role that trauma plays in clients’ lives and the challenges they face. They also must understand and learn how to manage the impact their work with this population has on them. This workshop introduces participants to the rationale for and five principles associated with the trauma informed formulation: safety, trust, collaboration, choice, and empowerment. Attendees will develop an understanding of how these principles can be applied in social work practice and supervision. This workshop will employ a discussion format, encouraging participants’ active participation. The presenter will integrate the latest theory and research and rely upon case material to illustrate key points. 

Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

• Understand the nature of trauma informed practice (services to clients) and care (the organizational context of service delivery);
• Recognize the overlap between trauma informed supervision and core skills of field instruction; and
• Adopt a trauma informed lens in their supervision of social work students

Presenter:

Carolyn Knight, PhD, MSW is a Professor of Social Work in the School of Social Work, University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr. Knight has more than thirty years of experience- most of it pro bono- working individually and in groups with adult survivors of childhood trauma, particularly sexual abuse. She is the author of two books, Introduction to working with adult survivors of childhood trauma: Strategies and skills and Group Therapy for Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse and co-editor of a third, with Dr. Geoffrey Greif, Group Work with Populations at Risk, 3rd edition. She is the co-author of a forthcoming social work practice text (with Professor Alex Gitterman), The Life Model of Social Work Practice, 4th ed., from Columbia University Press. She also is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on working with survivors of childhood trauma in group and individual treatment and engaging in trauma-informed practice and supervision.
