Workshop Description

Social workers are at risk for burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress (STS), and vicarious trauma. Some even develop PTSD. These negative impacts can prevent social workers from being fully available to work with clients, which can be detrimental to clients achieving their goals and being successful in treatment. Once the social worker is no longer suffering from STS etc., she/he can assist clients in learning these skills as they also need to learn better ways of managing stress and trauma. In this workshop, participants will learn about the various responses to stress, including the impact of working with clients who have a trauma history. Review of a study of agency personnel, their responses to working with clients who have a trauma history, and possible practices and procedures for change at the personal and agency levels will be discussed. Assessment of ways to identify personal stress levels will be shared, as well, as options for addressing this stress. Resources for developing a personal self-care plan will be provided.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Define Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) and identify its signs and symptoms.
  • Identify the negative impacts of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) on clients and client outcomes, when staff suffers from STS.
  • Describe how self-care practice enhances social workers’ ability to provide higher quality client care and assists clients in managing traumatic stress.
  • Evaluate their agency’s provision of quality self-care resources for staff and clients.
