Many Social Workers have a visceral response to the mere mention of Sex Offenders. This workshop will dispel myths, expand the understanding of sex offenders and humanize a group of individuals who are often misperceived, misunderstood and shunned by the therapeutic community. In addition, the instructor will review multiple interventions, current legislation that impacts sexual offenders as well as cover communication platforms used to track sex offenders, including the Sex Offender Registry and Residency Restrictions. Finally, this workshop will review current evaluation, assessment and treatment approaches that are commonly utilized by clinicians.  

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

• Analyze and discuss current research about sex offenders.
• Identify myths regarding sex offenders and formulate effective factual information as a means of bringing about social change.
• Describe best practices for sex offender supervision and outline current treatment goals for the work with sex offenders.
• Utilize assessment skills to formulate effective treatment planning when working with sex offenders.

Presenter:

Chris Farrell, LCSW-R, completed his undergraduate studies in Social Work at Michigan State University in 1985. He completed his MSW at SUNY Albany in 1991, He has been a practicing Social Worker for the past 30+ years. He has been a member of NASW for 25+ years. For the past 17 years he has worked for Ulster County Probation Department as the Clinical Supervisor for the Sex Offender Unit. To his knowledge he is the only person in NYS who holds this title in Probation. He is a member of National ATSA (Association for Treatment of Sex Abusers) and the NYSATSA Board.
