Date: Thursday, November 7, 2019

NASW Member Fee: Free

Time: 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This workshop will provide an overview of individual vulnerabilities and societal causes of homelessness. This will cover the interplay of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other trauma with experiences of oppression and shortages of jobs and affordable housing. The need for social work leadership in addressing homelessness will be tied to the NASW Code of Ethics, offering the RIS model perspective on response and describing the National Homelessness Social Work Initiative. The workshop addresses:

1) how the RIS model facilitates a comprehensive social work-led approach;

2) the role of social work leadership and university partnerships;

3) The role all social work practitioners can take to advance healthy social networks and policies that address homelessness;

4) Special populations at risk for homelessness – with a focus on college students in this presentation; and

5) discuss new partnership opportunities, including connections across sectors and through related concerns.

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Articulate background causes of homelessness and their interplay (individual vulnerabilities to societal causes of homelessness)
  • Apply the RIS framework to reveal prevention and intervention opportunities within participants’ programs and communities
  • Articulate the ethical responsibility and potential leadership role of social work, connecting one’s own work to the National Homelessness Social Work initiative and/or related university partnerships
  • Learn about the experiences of students in higher education who experience homelessness and housing insecurity, and consider responses to the needs of these students
  • Re-evaluate community partnerships and identify leadership opportunities to address risks for homelessness

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.
