Workshop Description
This workshop focuses on a cultural phenomenon known as Social Media Addiction. Speaker will define concept, explain reasons why people become readily dependent, and cross compare social media with other addictions, such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, and sex. Speaker will discuss generational patterns per age group, as well as statistical differences among demographic areas, socioeconomic statuses, gender, and culture. Speaker will cover the signs and indications of social media addiction, including trends related to dependency, attachment, and social needs and social status. Workshop will explore the reward system associated with the repetitive and compulsive use of social media. Speakers discusses the body and mind’s biochemical response to rewards and punishment, as they relate to addictive repetition. Workshop will outline patterns of compulsive behavior, dissociation, and escapism defense mechanisms to stress. Speaker will outline studies that have been done involving brain chemistry and development, in relation to the use of excessive technology. Workshop will explore themes of denial related to overuse of the internet and social media, as well as ways to improve awareness and effectively intervene with technological dependency. Lastly, workshop will cover ways to regain physiological control over rewards system, and ways to develop autonomy and detox from technology.  

 

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

  • DEFINE social media addiction and dependency.
  • DESCRIBE the reward network and brain chemistry, as it related to social media
  • EXPLAIN cultural and generational reasons why people readily become addicted to social media.
  • IDENTIFY ways to improve awareness into social media addiction and reduce the risk of becoming addicted.

This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.

Ayniimage-20190508130737-1.pngsa Leonardo is a Licensed Clinical Art Therapist (LCAT, ATR-BC), who has been in the field of mental health services for 12 years. She is the Director of Military Services at Long Island Center for Recovery. Her prior experience includes working in inpatient, outpatient, and non-profit settings with clients experiencing posttraumatic stress, addiction, family conflict, and other mental health challenges. She has concentrated on advanced program development and clinical education, locally and nationally. She continues to provide evidence-based and interactive style presentations to hospitals, non-profits, and corporate agencies, in an effort to raise awareness of current trends and improve competency within the healthcare community.
