Workshop Description
This workshop will provide an introduction to military culture and social work practice with military service members, veterans, and their families. It is designed to assist social workers in understanding military culture and to provide clinically and culturally competent services to military populations. Social workers will gain an understanding of the unique demands of the military and its influence on the service member and the social worker.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of military culture, command structure, and its impact on psychosocial health
- Distinguish the difference between social work practice in the active duty and veteran settings
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the NASW code of ethics and how to properly address ethical dilemmas in the military environment
- Identify the various psychological, systemic, and organizational barriers to care for military members, veterans, and their families
This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.

Dr. Marfilius is a U.S. Air Force Veteran and currently a Visiting Teaching Professor at Syracuse University. While on active duty, Dr. Marfilius served in the U.S. Air Force Biomedical Science Corps. He worked in a variety of mental health roles related to sexual assault prevention and response, suicide prevention, alcohol and drug prevention and treatment, and traumatic stress. Dr. Marfilius has also worked for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program.
