This seminar will address the complexities within family systems leading up to, during, and after a couple dissolve their marriage. Current statistics, actual case studies, problem solving and psychological detriments that impact the system will be presented for the benefit of clinicians in preparation and treating individuals and couples subjected to this life changing adjustment. The Effects of Divorce on Family Systems would best be geared toward clinicians at an intermediate and advanced level who have experience in working with couples and families.

  • Presenter will demonstrate learning how to treat couples in marital discord leading to divorce, during the divorce and post divorce process, both through the court system and mediation.

  • Presenter will demonstrate the complexities of the process of divorce including the psychological pains of grieving, legality, and eventual restructuring of the family, post divorce.

  • Identification of risk and protective factors associated with children’s psychological and academic, social adjustment, the importance of how this impacts parenting in two households, how co-parenting is remedied, the possibility of parent alienation, loyalty binds, parent/child alignment, sibling rivalry, and extended family involvement. Presenter will teach the clinician on how to detect behaviors that are the result of temporary adjustment of the fractured household. Separate from the system issues that lie beyond divorce but yet exacerbated by divorce, and those issues that are unrelated but can impact the divorce proceedings and family structure.

  •  An Introduction to finances and decision making around moneys and security while in an emotional state will be led by co-facilitator who is a CDFA (Certified Divorce Financial Analyst).  As experienced in courts and mediation future financial anxiety and uncertainty in lifestyle can halt the process of divorce settlement leaving the couple to further tensions and detrimental effects of all those living in the household. Presenter will teach how to detect between concrete and emotional facts in order to help the individual obtain clarity for long term decision making that is essential for divorce settlements.

  • Problem solving, solution based treatment will be offered to assist the clinician that is treating the family while coming to terms around changes in finances and life-style in order for the couple to resolve and dissolve and move toward healing.

  • A shift from sole-custody and residential custodian to more shared parenting model have been more frequent in the court system, as non-traditional homes and couples have become more main-stream. Clinicians will learn more about how non-traditional households hold up in court and be better equipped to serve their clients through-out custody disputes.
