Description:
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a form of interpersonal victimization that can have a major impact on a child’s development in a variety of ways and involve all life domains throughout one’s lifetime. This three-hour presentation will examine CSA from the perspective of the child, the non-offending adult(s), the larger community and the child molester. Participants will increase their awareness of how CSA impairs a child’s stress response system causing reactive or sensitive responses that can interfere with present functioning and learn ways to mitigate the lingering effects.

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this workshop, participants will learn:

  • RECOGNITION: Define child sexual abuse; identify who the “typical” child molester is; and identify developmentally appropriate and inappropriate behavior between children.
  • THE PROCESS: Identify how and why certain children, adults and communities are “picked”; the seduction and “grooming” process for all; and how child molesters sexualize and exploit children.
  • RECOGNITION AND DISCLOSURE ISSUES: How child molesters avoid getting caught and why abuse is not reported.
  • TRAUMA AND RECOVERY: What to do and say when a child discloses abuse; differentiate a child’s stress response from other behaviors that interfere with daily functioning; and understand institutional traumatization.
  • PREVENTION: Learn micro, mezzo, and macro interventions as well as prevention programs

This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.
