About the Program
This free seminar will be of interest to community-based providers that provide services at agencies for individuals living with HIV and Hepatitis C, including case managers, social workers, mental health counselors, substance use counselors, peer educators, patient navigators, HIV testers, HIV educators, and PrEP coordinators.
There is no registration fee. Please register by March 18, 2019. Seating is limited and space may fill up prior to this date. Register ASAP to ensure a spot. No walk-ins please. Please bring your registration confirmation with you. This is required to enter the program and will be e-mailed to you one week prior.

Program Descriptions
HIV & Hepatitis C: Current Research for Community-Based Providers
This cross-disciplinary program offers updated research and clinical findings for community-based providers (CBP) who are responsible for direct care, interventions and support for those impacted by HIV and Hepatitis C. Clients that are living with HIV and Hepatitis C have unique medical challenges and it is the goal of this session to provide the tools necessary to better understand not just the science behind HIV/AIDS, but also current ARV therapies offered as treatment. For those CBP attendees who already have the knowledge of treatment strategies, Dr. Miller will provide updates and changes. This session will also look at both the physical manifestation of HIV/HCV and the impact on CBP clients’ day-to-day lives and well-being. CBPs will be educated on statewide resources available to assist in direct care services for those living with HIV and Hepatitis C.
Key Community-Based Interventions for Addressing HIV Stigma
At healthcare facilities and other service-providing agencies, people living with HIV often experience negative attitudes and harmful actions that deter them from accessing services, disclosing information to providers, and adhering to treatment. Groups especially likely to face stigma and discrimination include people living with HIV, men who have sex with men, sex workers, injection drug users, and transgender clients. Although stigma and discrimination pose major barriers to better health outcomes, effective action is possible. This session will address the disempowerment and disenfranchisement of HIV-positive persons and train CBPs in identifying current risk factors. CBPs will learn evidence- and practice-based “best practice” tools to create a stigma-free environment when working with clients living with HIV.
HIV & Mental Health:
Diagnosis and Referral Training for Community-Based Providers
Individuals with untreated mental illness are at higher risk for HIV transmission due to the likelihood of risky behaviors (i.e. needle-sharing for intravenous drug use and unprotected sex). In addition, some HIV positive clients may be less likely to adhere to their medical appointments and treatment regimens, which can result in poor clinical outcomes. This cross-disciplinary session will review various mental health diagnoses most observed in HIV-positive clients and the importance of ongoing screening and assessment to better serve these clients. CBPs will also learn specific skills to effectively link clients to appropriate care and treatment.
All attendees will receive a certificate to verify their attendance and are encouraged to submit this documentation to other credentialing boards for reciprocity of credit, if needed.
