Social workers are at high risk of developing Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) as a result of consistent daily, exposure to clients’ traumatic experiences. Secondary trauma is an occupational hazard that can lead to the social worker exhibiting symptoms that mimic post traumatic stress disorder. Research shows that through proper self-care and social support we can reduce both the risk and effects of STS and develop resilience as we continue to provide care to clients who have experienced trauma.
Learning Objectives:
To achieve these goals we will discuss:
- the neurobiological dynamics of trauma
- the features of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS)
- the signs/symptoms of STS
- evidence-based strategies for managing STS
- strategies for supervisors to detect STS in supervisees
