Legislative Advocacy-VMHTI

Veterans Mental Health Training Initiative (VMHTI) – A project created by NASW-NYS policy staff and expertly implemented by the programming staff, the VMHTI is a comprehensive training collaborative between the National Association of Social Workers – New York State Chapter (NASW-NYS), the New York State Psychiatric Association (NYSPA) and the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) that educates both community mental healthcare providers and primary care healthcare providers on veterans-specific mental health issues. The focus of the program has included assessment, identification and clinical skill building related to post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, substance abuse, and military culture. This one-of-a-kind program has been recognized as a preeminent provider training and to date, has educated over 1600 mental health and human service providers across the state of New York. Continued legislative support and funding has allowed us the opportunity to better equip New York’s healthcare workforce with the tools required to meet the needs of our returning veterans.
