Learning Wednesday Series with Dr. Joe Hunter

Our members asked for more opportunities to engage with knowledgeable colleagues in the profession, in creative and convenient ways – and we heard you!

As a part of our 2018 Continuing Education Program, we are pleased to be launching a new initiative – Learning Wednesday Series with Dr. Joseph ‘Joe’ Hunter, LCSW, PhD. This online, bi-monthly series offers live Continuing Education in a broad array of topic areas on a consistent schedule. Dr. Hunter is a foremost expert in his field, and we are excited to have been able to partner with him to share his expertise with our membership.

Each workshop will take place on a Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST and is available for 1.5 continuing education contact hours. This series is available to NASW-NYS members for $10/workshop.

February 28, 2018 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Understanding “Big T” and “Little T”

This workshop has passed

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to lasting “implicit memories” that belie vulnerabilities to later life stress and trauma. Many of the adult diagnoses, such as depression, borderline personality, anxiety and substance use disorders, have their roots in ACEs. This webinar will discuss the relationship between the Big T and Little T trauma and the implications for later life mental illness, including diagnosis and treatment.
March 14, 2018 Depression: Etiology, Assessment, and Diagnosis

An overview of theory pertaining to depression and its etiology, as well as discuss assessment and DSM V depression-related diagnoses. A case will be presented, and the learners will be challenged to apply the diagnostic criteria and identify the prominent symptoms of depression, as well as respond to other questions designed to apply the learned material to the case.

This webinar will start by briefly introducing a case example on depression. Then, a brief PowerPoint presentation will review the relevant evidence-based practices and promising approaches on depression, including specific techniques. Learners will be challenged to describe what practice techniques would be used to address the specific needs and concerns of the case presented, pertaining to depression, noting these on their worksheets.
April 11, 2018 Anxiety: Etiology, Assessment, and Diagnosis

This webinar will start by briefly introducing a case example on an anxiety disorder. Then, a brief PowerPoint presentation will review relevant theories about anxiety disorder, provide a review the DSM V diagnostic criteria and highlight the prominent symptoms of the GAD. Then, a full case description will be provided, and the learners will be challenged to apply the diagnostic criteria and identify the prominent symptoms for the case using a worksheet. Clinical tools and techniques that serve to help facilitate accurate assessment and diagnosis of anxiety disorders will be discussed.
April 25, 2018 Anxiety: Promising and Evidence Based Treatments

This webinar will start by briefly introducing a case example on anxiety disorders.  Then, a brief PowerPoint presentation will review the relevant evidence-based practices and promising approaches for anxiety disorder treatment, including specific techniques. Next, the case will be more fully described and the diagnostic criteria will be identified by the learners using a poll. Learners will be challenged to describe what practice techniques would be used to address the specific needs and concerns of the case presented, pertaining to GAD, noting these on their worksheets. Then, additional discussion utilizing the chat function will be facilitated. Next, a brief dialogue is presented regarding the application of an intervention to the case on GAD, and the learners will be asked to offer suggested questions and statements that show their understanding of how to apply the techniques learned.

This webinar will present a compelling review of the literature that reveals the importance of addressing individual difference variables, such as age, gender and race, to successfully address the needs of adolescents with alcohol and substance use disorders treatment. These are the questions that are often asked, but what else matters and how do we convince insurance/managed care of this? This training will focus on how risk should be discussed, so insurance payers permit the admission, respect the request for continuing stay, and support the discharge timing and plan.

Suicide Prevention for Seniors: The Role of Perceived Life Meaning and Purpose

There are many challenges that our aging adults learn to tackle, and productive aging is not only a goal but a reality for most. However, life can throw curves that can be overwhelmingly stressful, erode support systems, and threaten a seniors’ perception of life meaning and purpose. These variables and other significant factors contributing to isolation, loneliness, and depression will be presented to enhance social worker’s assessment skills and treatment planning with this vulnerable population.

 

November 7, 2018 Treatment Strategies for Seniors at Risk for Suicide

Seniors are uniquely at high risk for suicide, because, more often than with other age groupings, they are successful when they engage in self-directed violence with suicide intent. The drivers of suicide risk for seniors have been identified, and these offer insights into how and why specific treatment strategies will be instrumental. Promising and evidence based approaches consistent with these strategies will be discussed.

December 5, 2018 Experiential Group Work with Adolescents: Addressing the Experience Void

Adolescents are often sophomoric about their perceptions of what they know, then behave accordingly. As a result, in their search for autonomy, they often find themselves susceptible to negative social influences, engaged in dangerous and/or unhealthy behavior, and/or in trouble at school, home and/or with the law. This webinar will focus on how experiential group work can help fill the gaps caused by this lack of experience, and impart new and more sophisticated ways of understanding themselves and those circumstances that influence and maintain dysfunctional and counter-productive behavior.
