Workshop Description
COVID-19 has brought incredible challenges to almost every society. These include the heightened awareness of existing inequalities through the immense tolls that the virus has afflicted on older adults, particularly those whose vulnerability is increased due to race, ethnicity, and poverty. Social work with its focus on oppression and injustice can intervene at many levels to alleviate these disparities and increase the well-being of older adults and their families. Particular attention will be given to the role virtual interventions can play in assisting these persons.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe key factors that contribute to the vulnerability of older to COVID-19.
- Discuss the role of ageism in the vulnerability experienced by older adults.
- Identify the impact that isolation has on older adults.
- Describe how virtual support can impact grandparent caregivers and how this may relate to other groups of older adults.

Carole Cox, MSW, PhD, is a professor at the Graduate School of Social Service, Fordham University. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a Fulbright scholar. She also serves as a representative of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) to the United Nations. Dr. Cox is the author of 8 books and more than 60 journal articles dealing with dementia, grandparenting issues, human trafficking and social policy. Her book “Social Policy for an Aging Society: A Human Rights Perspective deals specifically with the issue of policy development based on the rights rather than the needs of older adults. She has been involved with grandparents raising grandchildren for many years, having developed an empowerment series for them which, during the COVID-19 pandemic, was transformed into a virtual program.
