Workshop Description
Health literacy, or the ability of individuals to obtain, process and understand basic health information, is an often overlooked factor in the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities today. Even more overlooked, is the role of the provider or clinician in supporting health literacy beyond plain language. During this webinar, we’ll discuss the concept of health literacy, the state of health literacy in the US, and the role health literacy plays as a health determinant. As a group, we’ll work through best practices for health literacy at both the micro and macro levels, and we’ll explore the effect it has played throughout the COVID-19 crisis including common barriers to health literacy along with solutions.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Define health literacy from both individual and professional perspectives
- Explain the role that health literacy plays in the prevention and treatment of common mental and physical health issues facing our communities today
- Give two examples of how providers at the micro and macro levels can support health literacy
- List common barriers to health literacy in a variety of settings and communities and possible solutions to those barriers

Jaime D. Costello, MPH, CPP-G, is a public health professional with extensive experience working in the fields of addiction prevention and treatment, community coalition work and professional training. Throughout her career, she has planned, led and evaluated a variety of initiatives to train community members, mental health and addiction professionals the skills needed to prevent, assess, treat and support recovery from addiction as a standalone and co-occurring disorder. Jaime also has a vast knowledge of health promotion and health communication and has seen success in the many projects she has developed and managed in these fields. Jaime is passionate about engaging the community in change efforts, and emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary work among fields to address behavioral and physical health concerns. Jaime received her Master of Public Health from the University of New England, and lives with her family in the Adirondack Park.
