Workshop Description
At first glance, the profession of social work seems to be rooted in social justice and committed to the fight against all forms of injustice. However, the data suggests that much of our work perpetuates racism and white supremacy. If we are going to uproot white supremacy in the social work profession, we must address the racism that exists on every level, including within social work education. This workshop takes a reflective look on the ways white supremacy is maintained, and even perpetuated, through social work education and training. This training also considers the role the Council on Social Work Education has in the development of an antiracist social work profession. All participants will be challenged to consider the ways we prepare social workers for practice and how well we’re living up to our own professional standards.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify the ways racism shapes the systems of higher education
- Describe the demographic make up of the social work profession
- Engage in critical reflections regarding the ways we train social workers
- Describe the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) role in the upholding of the social work profession

Charla Cannon Yearwood (she/her), MSSW, LSW, is a licensed social worker, having earned her MSSW from University of Tennessee Knoxville. She believes that we are all connected in community. Meaning, her healing is tied to your healing. She sees therapy, education, and effective services for the community as part of our liberation work. Along with her practice, Connected in Community, LLC, Charla is also an adjunct social work professor. Her teaching and research focus is Black liberation, challenging white supremacy in the social work profession, community organizing, and distance education. Charla lives in Indiana along with her husband, two little humans, dog, and cat. As a family, they’re obsessed with all things Disney and enjoy a good sing-a-long. Although Charla loves a good adventure and discovering someplace new, she’s an introvert who could spend days snuggled under a blanket, rotating between popular reality TV, naps, Twitter, and novels.
