Workshop Description
Abusive Traumatic Bonding (ATB™) is a phenomenon present in many, if not all, cases of Intimate Partner Violence. It is closely related to the cycle of violence. ATB™ usually begins after the climax stage in the cycle of violence and is solidified during the second and second (and ongoing) honeymoon period(s). As the cycle of violence progresses, the bond becomes stronger and stronger, until it is almost impossible for the victim to leave. COVID-19 has impacted Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) to a great extent. More than ever, clinicians need to be aware of the increasing need for skilled interventions to address ATB™.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Increase their general knowledge of intimate partner violence, the cycle of violence and its relationship to ATB™
- Identify and apply treatment modalities to be effective in clinical settings with clients experiencing ATB™
- Understand how the implications of race, gender, culture/ethnicity, sexual orientation, level of ability, and socio-economic status play in ATB™
- Increase awareness of how their counter-transferential responses impact the therapeutic relationship and treatment outcomes and have a “toolbox” at hand to cope with these feelings

Karen Landmann, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Manhattan. Educated at Columbia University, she has been in the field for 27 years. Her clientele consists primarily of persons dealing with depression, trauma, and chronic illness. They come from a great variety of ethnic and cultural origins. Ms. Landmann has been working with persons in abusive relationships in which Abusive Traumatic Bonding ™(ATB™) is present throughout her career. She is informed by up-to-date research and her professional experience in developing her interventions. An article on ATB™ written by Karen was featured in Good Therapy on August 23, 2021. Karen has presented on Abusive Traumatic Bonding™ previously at NYU Silver School of Social Work Office of Global and Lifelong Learning in 2020 and 2021. She has also conducted this webinar at National Association of Social Workers New York City (NASW-NYC) and Hudson Valley Professional Development . In addition, Karen has presented “Exploring the Subtleties of Human Groups” at Hudson Valley Professional Development in January 2022, and a workshop on Major Depressive Disorder and Suicidality for GoodTherapy in September 2021. She has a keynote conference presentation at Convenings of Crisis Intervention Personnel under her belt, as well as numerous peer-reviewed publications, including Psychoanalytic Social Work and a book chapter in “Poverty and Street Children in East Africa” (Edward Mellen Press).
