Workshop Description
Due to the prevalence of clients with early childhood trauma and insecure attachment histories, it is likely that social workers and other mental health professionals will encounter clients who meet the criteria for dissociative identity disorder (DID). This workshop is an introduction to diagnosing and treating these clients. The etiology and prevalence of DID will be explored, including false positives and false negatives. The assessment process will be outlined in order to diagnose the disorder. Finally, treatment challenges and processes will be introduced.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the connection between childhood trauma and attachment wounds in the etiology of DID.
  • Describe pertinent questions to identify dissociative symptoms when assessing and diagnosing clients.
  • Outline the treatment process for clients with DID.

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.

NASW-NYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (Provider ID #0014), licensed mental health counselors (Provider ID #MHC-0053), licensed marriage and family therapists (Provider ID #MFT-0037) and licensed psychologists (Provider ID #PSY-0088).
