Workshop Description
As more members of younger generations identify as LGBTQ+, it is increasingly important for social workers to discuss and address ethical issues that may arise when supporting LGBTQ+ youth. This workshop is designed for school social workers who are interested in learning about how to manage ethical concerns that may arise when working with LGBTQ+ students and their family members, in the context of the NASW Code of Ethics, NYS law, and policies in NYS schools. Ethical concerns may arise when social workers, teachers, and other helping professionals lack certain knowledge, skills, and resources to provide LGBTQ+ students with appropriate support, including gender-affirming care, dealing with discrimination, screening for crisis situations, and creating safe spaces within a school environment. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their own concerns regarding ethical issues such as informed consent, assent, providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students, cultural humility, confidentiality, and managing potential conflicts between the wishes and interests of students and their parents/guardians.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
● Identify ethical concerns that may arise when working with students who identify as LGBTQ+
● Describe ways to incorporate the NASW ethical standards of cultural competence and cultural humility when working with LGBTQ+ students and their family members
● Identify methods to manage ethical issues related to privacy confidentiality, fidelity, safety, and conflicting wishes when working with LGBTQ+ students and their family members
This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.

Allan Edward Barsky, JD, MSW, PhD. Allan Barsky received his PhD from the University of Toronto Faculty of Social Work, his MSW from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He is currently a professor of social work at Florida Atlantic University. His teaching and research interests include social work practice theory and skill development, pedagogy, conflict resolution, professional ethics, working with LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, and people affected by substance use disorders. His book credits include Ethics and Values in Social Work, Clinicians in Court, Essential Ethics for Social Work Practice, Conflict Resolution for the Helping Professions, and Interprofessional Practice with Diverse Populations. Dr. Barsky was awarded the “FAU Scholar of the Year Award” in 2020. Dr. Barsky chaired the National Association of Social Workers “Code of Ethics Review Committee” (2016-2017) and was presented with NASW’s “Excellence in Ethics Award” (2015).
